Don't stop believin': 'Glee' is coming back. Disney+ and Hulu have officially greenlit a reboot of the hit musical dramedy, the platforms confirmed on Wednesday, October 21, in a joint post reading, 'It's Official, Glee is returning.'
The original series, created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, premiered on Fox in 2009 and ran for six seasons and 121 episodes until 2015, following the New Directions glee club at William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio, through stories about relationships, sexuality, race, disability and mental health, all built around covers of popular songs. The new project is produced by 20th Television, which made the original.
Murphy has been laying the groundwork in public. He told Entertainment Tonight in September that he had just finished a script, written with Falchuk and Brennan — who wrote the first two seasons — and that he had been in touch with around 10 original cast members, who were enthusiastic but full of questions. No casting has been officially confirmed, although original star Lea Michele has said she will always love 'Glee' and will follow Murphy wherever he goes.
The revival arrives with the original's complicated legacy in tow, including the deaths of cast members Cory Monteith, Naya Rivera and Mark Salling. Storyline, production dates and a premiere window have not been announced.
