Vancouver has elected Canada's first Green Party mayor. Pete Fry defeated incumbent Ken Sim in Saturday's civic election, taking 98,494 votes to Sim's 67,467 in a result that redraws the political map of British Columbia's largest city.

Fry, a longtime Green city councillor, campaigned on housing affordability, climate action and neighbourhood-level decision-making. His victory ends Sim's term after a single mandate and gives the Greens their most senior municipal office in the country.

Official results are scheduled to be certified on October 21, and Fry is set to be inaugurated on November 2, when the new council takes office.

The result will be watched well beyond Vancouver: a Green mayor in a major Canadian city tests whether the party's municipal strength can translate into durable governing power on housing, transit and climate files.
