At least four people are recovering from injuries after a head-on collision closed the Coquihalla Highway for several hours on Saturday morning, according to CityNews reporting summarized in Monday's Vancouver news roundups.

At least three of the injured were rushed to hospital in critical condition after the crash, which happened just north of Merritt. The highway, the main route linking Vancouver and the Lower Mainland with the B.C. Interior, was closed while emergency crews worked at the scene.

Investigators are still working to determine what caused the collision. No update on the condition of the injured had been released in the reports available on Monday.

The Coquihalla is one of British Columbia's most heavily travelled mountain highways and a critical freight corridor. Closures on the route routinely force long detours through the Fraser Canyon or over the Okanagan Connector.
